Researchers in the Miami Observatory have partnered with the Centro Cultural de España-Miami (and its parent organization, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development),
the Fundación Alternativas, and the Fundación Santillana to conduct two in-depth conferences/workshops to produce reports on the State of Latino Media and Music in the United States.
The first meeting and set of workshops, led by George Yúdice (professor at UM and director of the Observatory) and Germán Rey (professor and dean/director of Centro Ático at the Universidad Javeriana), were held at the University of Miami in November 2008. The second meeting was organized by the Fundación Alternativas, with the collaboration of the Observatory, and with the participation of George Yúdice and Lillian Manzor (also a professor at the University of Miami and director of the Cuban Theater Digital Archive was well as the New Technologies initiative of the Observatory); it was held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, in Madrid.
The first meeting at the University of Miami resulted in a comprehensive report by George Yúdice and Germán Rey. Yúdice expanded and published an updated version of the report with the Fundación Alternativas. The second meeting generated an update of Yúdice’s report by Luis Albornoz.
