Corporate social responsibility (CSR) ensues from the increasing demand for more ethical business practices. It includes the voluntary elimination of practices that harm the environment, the community, and the public in general.

It also promotes taking responsibility for the public interest by proactively contributing to community-based development through financial assistance as well as the transfer of know-how. CSR is applied to many areas of social life, from monitoring environmental impact and promoting fair labor and fair trade practices to assisting local businesses and other organizations improve their operations and output.

This initiative will host a conference and a series of workshops on October 7 and 8, 2011 at which corporate actors involved in CSR will work with 25 cultural enterprises in Central America in knowledge sharing, strategic planning, and other activities that will help these cultural enterprises to enhance their production, promotion, and distribution and expand their publics and markets, thus becoming more sustainable. Worldwide, the cultural sector is a major contributor to the GNP and employment, but in developing countries, much if this activity takes place in the informal sector and does not have a significant share of international markets. This initiative aims to establish a set of procedures to change this situation. This first focus on Central America is a pilot project, which will be extended subsequently to the entirety of the Latin American and Caribbean region.
