This series brings to Coral Gables and the larger South Florida community new, cutting edge programs from and on Cuba rarely seen or discussed in S. Florida (with the support of the city of Coral Gables and ABC charters)..
It is the only space that brings Cuban artists and scholars form the island to Coral Gables and it is one of the few platforms in S. Florida that brings together alternative, young Cuban artists with their American and US-Cuban counterparts.
- to provide intercultural and international exchanges between Coral Gables audiences, artists, and academics and their Cuban counterparts in order to expand their critical, social, scholarly, and creative perspectives;
- to establish a forward-looking collaborative research agenda on Cuban culture wherever it is produced;
- to strengthen civil society on and off the island by establishing a safe space in which to exchange differing viewpoints about Cuba.
Although we have been presenting programs from Cuba since 2001, the series Cuban Culture on the Edge started in September 2008 as part of the Latin American Studies Film Series, sponsored by Modern Languages and Literatures and The Center for Latin American Studies, with the support of Florida International University. The series began with a focus on film and the visual arts from Cuba always accompanied by an educational component that allows for interaction
and exchange with the audience. In 2009 when the Cuban Theater Digital Archive became a co-sponsor, the series expanded to include theater and to connect with local non-profits cultural institutions. It now has an ongoing partnership with Fundarte and the Spanish Cultural Center.
